For many, many years it has been law that a hot water safety valve must be installed on every new home, unit, bungalow etc.. Or on an existing home the moment any plumbing work has been altered in the home, or the hot water unit has been changed.
This law is not meant to be annoying its meant to protect our most vulnerable , the young, the elderly and the disabled.
There is still millions of homes that do not have a tempering valve installed.
At 50 deg it takes 5 min to cause a 3rd deg burn
At 55 deg it takes 10 sec to cause a 3rd deg burn
At 60 deg it only takes 1 sec to cause a 3rd deg burn
The average temperature of a domestic storage hot water unit is “70 deg”
A tempering valve mixes cold water with hot water after it comes out of the water heater so it can not come out of your tap any higher than 50 deg.
If your hot water service has not been supplying enough hot water for your family’s needs DO NOT turn it up! If you do not have a tempering valve you are flirting with danger.
Children are curious and like to explore there surrounding. If they don’t know that hot water is dangerous a severe scald can result, and require painful skin grafts and years of treatment.
A tempering valve is not a big expense and most of the time can easily be retro fitted to your existing hot water unit.
